Candida & Yeast Overgrowth

Starve the yeast, break the biofilm, kill the overgrowth with botanical antifungals, and reseed with beneficial flora — a 4–8 week protocol for gut, skin, and recurrent yeast issues.

Prevention
Key nutrients: Caprylic acid, biotin, vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, beneficial probiotics (especially S. boulardii).
Eat regularly: Coconut oil, garlic, onion, ginger, apple cider vinegar, sauerkraut, kimchi, bone broth, low-sugar berries, leafy greens, wild fish.
Eliminate sugar, refined carbs, alcohol, fruit juice, vinegars (except ACV), and mold-prone foods (peanuts, old grains) for 4–8 weeks. Address antibiotic and oral-contraceptive history.

Caprylic acid

OtherModerate evidence

600–1200 mg with meals 3×/day — medium-chain fatty acid from coconut that disrupts candida cell membranes.

Oregano oil

HerbStrong evidence

150 mg standardized to 70%+ carvacrol, 2–3×/day for 2–4 weeks — potent broad-spectrum antifungal.

⚠ Cautions: Take with food; cycle off after 4 weeks; avoid in pregnancy.

Pau d'arco

HerbTraditional use

Strong decoction (1 tbsp inner bark simmered 20 min) 2–3 cups daily — Amazonian antifungal traditionally used for candida.

Garlic (allicin)

FoodStrong evidence

1–2 raw crushed cloves daily or 600 mg aged garlic extract — broad antifungal active even against drug-resistant strains.

Saccharomyces boulardii

OtherStrong evidence

5–10 billion CFU 2×/day — beneficial yeast that crowds out candida and restores gut barrier; safe with antifungals.

Berberine

HerbStrong evidence

500 mg 2–3× daily before meals — antimicrobial and biofilm-disrupting; pairs well with oregano oil.

Coconut oil

FoodModerate evidence

1–3 tbsp virgin coconut oil daily — lauric and caprylic acids reduce candida colonization throughout the GI tract.

Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium blend

OtherStrong evidence

30–50 billion CFU multi-strain probiotic at bedtime — reseeds beneficial flora after the kill phase.

A note of caution. Natural doesn't mean risk-free. Herbs and supplements can interact with medications, affect pregnancy, or worsen certain conditions. Speak with a qualified clinician before starting a new regimen, especially if you take prescriptions.
