Earache (Children)

Gentle, time-honoured remedies for the throbbing, often nighttime ear pain of childhood. Always see a clinician for high fever, fluid behind the eardrum lasting more than a few days, or a child under 6 months.

Prevention
Key nutrients: Vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, omega-3, probiotics.
Eat regularly: Oily fish, eggs, citrus, kiwi, berries, pumpkin seeds, plain yogurt or kefir.
Limit smoke exposure and bottle-feeding while lying flat — both raise ear-infection risk.

Garlic-mullein oil drops

HerbModerate evidence

2–3 warm (body-temperature) drops in the affected ear 2–3× daily for a few days. The classic herbalist remedy for childhood earaches — antimicrobial and pain-relieving.

Pairs well with: Elderberry syrup, vitamin C, chamomile tea
⚠ Cautions: Do NOT use if the eardrum is perforated or if there's discharge from the ear.

Warm onion or salt sock compress

OtherTraditional use

Heat a small cotton sock filled with coarse salt (or a roasted onion wrapped in cloth) and hold against the painful ear for 10–15 minutes. Eases pain and draws congestion.

Chamomile tea

HerbTraditional use

Weak warm infusion to drink, plus a chamomile-soaked cloth held over the ear — calming, mildly anti-inflammatory, and helps sleep.

Pairs well with: Lavender on the pillow

Elderberry syrup

HerbStrong evidence

1 tsp 3–4× daily during the underlying cold/virus that triggers most childhood ear infections.

Xylitol

OtherModerate evidence

Chewing gum or syrup (under age 6 use syrup) reduces middle-ear infection rates by inhibiting S. pneumoniae adhesion.

⚠ Cautions: Keep away from dogs — toxic to them.
A note of caution. Natural doesn't mean risk-free. Herbs and supplements can interact with medications, affect pregnancy, or worsen certain conditions. Speak with a qualified clinician before starting a new regimen, especially if you take prescriptions.
