Liver & Detox

Fatty Liver (NAFLD)

Reverse non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by lowering insulin resistance, mobilizing stored liver fat, and protecting hepatocytes with milk thistle, berberine, choline, and antioxidant-rich foods.

Prevention
Key nutrients: Choline, betaine, omega-3, vitamin E, B-complex, magnesium, silymarin, polyphenols.
Eat regularly: Eggs (yolks), wild salmon, sardines, leafy greens, beets, artichoke, walnuts, coffee (1–3 cups/day is liver-protective), berries, olive oil, garlic, cruciferous vegetables.
Cut fructose, seed oils, ultra-processed carbs, and alcohol. Time-restricted eating (12–16 h overnight fast), strength training, and steady weight loss of 7–10% reverses most NAFLD.

Milk thistle (silymarin)

HerbStrong evidence

150 mg standardized to 80% silymarin, 2–3× daily — protects hepatocytes, lowers liver enzymes (ALT/AST), and reduces fat accumulation.

Berberine

HerbStrong evidence

500 mg 2–3× daily before meals — lowers liver fat, insulin resistance, and triglycerides; rivals metformin in trials.

⚠ Cautions: May interact with diabetes and blood-pressure medications.

Choline

OtherStrong evidence

425–550 mg/day from eggs, liver, or sunflower lecithin — essential for exporting fat from the liver; deficiency directly causes NAFLD.

Artichoke leaf

HerbStrong evidence

600 mg extract 2×/day stimulates bile flow and reduces hepatic fat and enzymes in clinical trials.

Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols)

VitaminStrong evidence

400–800 IU/day reduces inflammation and fibrosis in non-diabetic NAFLD/NASH.

⚠ Cautions: Higher doses long-term may raise bleeding risk; coordinate with a clinician.

TUDCA

OtherModerate evidence

250–500 mg 1–2×/day — bile acid that protects liver cells and improves cholestasis and fatty-liver markers.

Dandelion root

HerbTraditional use

Decoction or 500 mg extract daily — traditional bitter that supports bile flow and gentle liver decongestion.

Natrum Sulphuricum 6X (tissue salt)

MineralTraditional use

Schüssler 'liver salt' — 4 tablets 2–3× daily for sluggish liver, bitter taste, and biliary congestion.

A note of caution. Natural doesn't mean risk-free. Herbs and supplements can interact with medications, affect pregnancy, or worsen certain conditions. Speak with a qualified clinician before starting a new regimen, especially if you take prescriptions.
