Histamine Intolerance & MCAS

Reduce the flushing, hives, headaches, brain fog, and GI symptoms of histamine intolerance and mast-cell activation by stabilizing mast cells, supporting DAO breakdown, and reducing the histamine load.

Prevention
Key nutrients: Vitamin C, DAO enzyme, quercetin, vitamin B6 (P5P), copper, zinc, magnesium, omega-3.
Eat regularly: Freshly cooked meats, well-cooked vegetables, rice, oats, pears, apples, blueberries, leafy greens, olive oil. Avoid aged/fermented foods, leftovers, cured meats, alcohol, vinegars, aged cheese, tomato, spinach, eggplant, citrus, shellfish during the elimination phase.
Cook fresh and eat fast — histamine builds rapidly in stored protein. Address gut health (SIBO, dysbiosis, leaky gut) and consider underlying triggers like mold exposure, EBV, or hormonal shifts.

Quercetin

OtherStrong evidence

500 mg 2–3×/day with meals — flavonoid that stabilizes mast cells and prevents histamine release; foundational for histamine intolerance and MCAS.

DAO enzyme (diamine oxidase)

OtherStrong evidence

1 capsule 15 min before higher-histamine meals — replaces deficient endogenous DAO, the enzyme that breaks down dietary histamine in the gut.

Vitamin C (buffered)

VitaminStrong evidence

500–1000 mg 2–4×/day — naturally degrades histamine and supports DAO production.

Stinging nettle (freeze-dried)

HerbModerate evidence

300–600 mg freeze-dried leaf 2×/day during flares — clinical evidence for allergic rhinitis and antihistamine effect.

Luteolin

OtherModerate evidence

100–200 mg 2×/day — flavonoid with mast-cell stabilizing activity; particularly studied for MCAS-related neuroinflammation and brain fog.

Vitamin B6 (P5P)

VitaminStrong evidence

25–50 mg P5P daily — essential cofactor for DAO; deficiency worsens histamine intolerance.

Holy basil (tulsi)

HerbModerate evidence

300–600 mg extract or 2 cups strong tea daily — adaptogenic and mast-cell calming.

Magnesium glycinate

MineralModerate evidence

300–400 mg/day — calms the nervous system and reduces mast-cell reactivity to stress triggers.

A note of caution. Natural doesn't mean risk-free. Herbs and supplements can interact with medications, affect pregnancy, or worsen certain conditions. Speak with a qualified clinician before starting a new regimen, especially if you take prescriptions.
