Mold & Mycotoxin Detox

Remove the source first, then bind mycotoxins in the gut, support liver and lymphatic clearance, and replenish glutathione. Mold illness (CIRS) is complex — work with a qualified practitioner.

Prevention
Key nutrients: Glutathione, NAC, glycine, sulforaphane, vitamin C, vitamin E, B-vitamins, omega-3, magnesium.
Eat regularly: Broccoli sprouts, cruciferous veg, garlic, onions, beets, berries, oily fish, leafy greens, filtered water; avoid stored grains, peanuts, corn, and aged cheeses if reactive.
Inspect and remediate any water damage, leaks, or visible mold in the home. Use HEPA air filtration and dehumidify damp spaces below 50% humidity. Test indoor air (ERMI/HERTSMI) if symptoms persist.

Remediate the source

OtherStrong evidence

STEP ONE: identify and remove mold exposure — fix leaks, replace contaminated materials, professional remediation for >10 sq ft of visible mold. Detox is futile while exposure continues.

Activated charcoal

OtherStrong evidence

500–2000 mg between meals binds mycotoxins (aflatoxin, ochratoxin) in the gut. Take 2+ hours from food, medications, and supplements.

⚠ Cautions: Can cause constipation; drink plenty of water and pair with magnesium.

Bentonite clay

OtherModerate evidence

1 tsp food-grade bentonite in water 1–2×/day between meals — binds aflatoxins and other mycotoxins. Drink plenty of water.

Chlorella (broken-cell-wall)

OtherModerate evidence

3–5 g/day binds mycotoxins and heavy metals; well tolerated and replaces lost nutrients.

Glutathione (liposomal)

OtherStrong evidence

250–500 mg/day liposomal — directly replenishes the master antioxidant depleted by mold exposure.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC)

OtherStrong evidence

600–1200 mg/day boosts glutathione production and breaks up biofilms used by mold colonies in sinuses and gut.

Broccoli sprouts (sulforaphane)

FoodStrong evidence

Daily fresh sprouts or sulforaphane extract upregulate Nrf2 detox pathways for mycotoxin clearance.

Milk thistle (silymarin)

HerbStrong evidence

300 mg silymarin 2–3×/day supports liver detoxification of aflatoxin and ochratoxin.

Saccharomyces boulardii

OtherModerate evidence

5–10 billion CFU/day — beneficial yeast that crowds out pathogenic mold/yeast in the gut and supports IgA.

Oregano oil

HerbModerate evidence

Enteric-coated 150 mg 2×/day for 2–4 weeks — antifungal for gut mold/Candida overgrowth that often follows exposure.

Infrared sauna

OtherModerate evidence

20–40 minutes 3–5×/week mobilizes mycotoxins through sweat; rinse off afterward and replenish electrolytes.

Silicea 6X (tissue salt)

MineralTraditional use

Schüssler salt — 4 tablets 2–3× daily supports the body's expulsion of foreign matter and chronic low-grade inflammation.

A note of caution. Natural doesn't mean risk-free. Herbs and supplements can interact with medications, affect pregnancy, or worsen certain conditions. Speak with a qualified clinician before starting a new regimen, especially if you take prescriptions.
