OCD & Intrusive Thoughts

Calm obsessive thinking and compulsive urges with NAC, inositol, saffron, and glutamate-modulating nutrients — the most evidence-based natural support for OCD-spectrum conditions.

Prevention
Key nutrients: NAC, inositol, magnesium glycinate, zinc, vitamin D, omega-3 (EPA), B6, glycine, vitamin B12, methylfolate.
Eat regularly: Wild salmon, sardines, eggs, pumpkin seeds, dark leafy greens, fermented foods, berries, walnuts, organ meats.
Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy is the gold-standard psychological treatment. Reduce caffeine and alcohol — both worsen intrusive thoughts. Daily aerobic exercise reduces obsessive intensity. Sleep regularity is critical — sleep loss spikes OCD symptoms.

NAC (N-acetylcysteine)

OtherStrong evidence

1200–3000 mg/day in divided doses for 8–12 weeks — multiple RCTs show reduced OCD severity, trichotillomania, and skin picking via glutamate modulation.

Inositol (myo-inositol)

OtherStrong evidence

12–18 g/day in divided doses — clinical trials show benefit comparable to SSRIs for OCD with very mild side effects.

Saffron

HerbModerate evidence

30 mg standardized extract daily — emerging trials show benefit for OCD and depression with intrusive thinking.

Magnesium glycinate or threonate

MineralModerate evidence

300–400 mg/day — calms NMDA glutamate overactivity that drives obsessive looping; threonate crosses the blood–brain barrier well.

Omega-3 (high EPA)

OtherModerate evidence

2–3 g EPA/day — supports neuroinflammation reduction and serotonergic function in OCD-spectrum disorders.

Ashwagandha

HerbModerate evidence

300–600 mg KSM-66 daily — lowers cortisol and reduces the anxiety substrate that fuels compulsions.

Lemon balm + L-theanine

HerbModerate evidence

300 mg lemon balm + 200 mg L-theanine 1–2×/day — calms acute mental looping and anxiety without sedation.

Kali Phosphoricum 6X (tissue salt)

MineralTraditional use

Schüssler nerve salt — 4 tablets 2–3× daily for nervous exhaustion, racing thoughts, and mental fatigue from rumination.

A note of caution. Natural doesn't mean risk-free. Herbs and supplements can interact with medications, affect pregnancy, or worsen certain conditions. Speak with a qualified clinician before starting a new regimen, especially if you take prescriptions.
